Help & advice
How long will it take to upload my work?
The actual speed will depend on your Internet connection, but a typical ADSL/broadband connection will upload between 1 to 2MB per minute.
Create zip archives if you have a lot of files
If you have a large number of smaller files, we do suggest that you use an archiving program such as WinZip, StuffIt or Tar to convert your files to a single archive. This will decrease overall size and simplify your upload.
For works such as websites and software applications, which often span multiple directories, this is especially important, and as this will also preserve the directory structure of the files.
Uploading audio files
We accept audio files in any format but recommend MP3 files if your are registering online as the MP3 format gives the best trade off between file size and quality.
Please ensure that the files you upload actually contain audio and are not file pointers or playlists. If in doubt, always check the size of the files you are uploading: CDA files, playlist files and other file pointers will be very small, perhaps a few kilobytes, while files containing audio will tend to be several megabytes in size.
How do registration updates work?
Each update is a separate evidence deposit, but it shares the registration number and expiry date of the existing registration. This allows new versions of a work to be added without the need for separate registration.
What are the advantages of using updates?
You only have one registration per work, regardless of how many times you update that work. At the end of the registration period, you only have one registration to renew to continue cover for the work.
As each deposit is individually recorded it creates a record of the evolution of your work over time.
Why is there a fee for processing updates?
We must treat every submission as a separate item of evidence with its own chain of custody, and process it accordingly. There is always a processing fee, but typically updates are much cheaper that new registrations. Additionally, the financial transaction itself leaves its own audit trail and provides another layer of verifiable evidence.
When I submit an update will it overwrite files I have already submitted?
No. Every submission it treated as a separate deposit of evidence with its own date and reference, nothing is ever overwritten.
Do I have to submit the whole work again every time I update?
If only a specific part of the work has changed, it is fine to just submit just the new or changed parts.
What should I enter in the ’new title‘ field?
If the main title for the work that is shown on your last certificate is no longer correct enter the new title for your work here, otherwise you should leave this blank.
